A MESSAGE FROM OUR RECTOR
Friday last October I was preparing for a funeral at Christ Church when a notice popped up on my news feed – Rev’d Sarah Mullally had been named as the new Archbishop of Canterbury designate. Up until that point I had not realised that I was feminist. However, when I heard the news probably the best way to describe it was that my spirit jumped.
At that time, I determined that I would somehow be in Canterbury on the day when Sarah was installed to the role. So, just before Easter, I travelled there for a 5 – day retreat.
On the day of the installation, I was able to join with congregation members and clergy women from all over in a church very close to the cathedral, as we watched the service together. We then had time to run from the church into the city centre to see Archbishop Sarah bless the city. There was a deep sense of joy and wonder among so many—especially those who had once hardly dared hope that women would even be ordained priests, let alone imagine a female archbishop in their lifetime.
What sort of an archbishop will Sarah Mullally be? That is always hard to predict, but her life has been one of both faith and service—from her early commitment to Christ as a teenager to leadership roles in the NHS and the Church. She brings both compassion and experience to her calling.
In her first sermon, she took as her text the story of the Annunciation and the words from Luke 1:37: “Nothing is impossible for God.” She reflected on her pilgrimage walk from London to Canterbury, as well as her wider journey of faith, drawing on Mary’s simple response to Gabriel: “Here I am.” Archbishop Sarah spoke of a Church called to roll up its sleeves in loving service, and she did not shy away from the challenges we face, including the pain of conflict in the world and the Church’s failures in safeguarding.
She ended with this invitation:
“Maybe as you are listening to me, you are thinking about your own journey… Knowing God is with you makes all the difference… And you can respond to God’s invitation with words as simple as Mary’s: ‘Here I am.’”
As I stood among the crowd that day, it felt as though those words were not only hers, but an invitation to each one of us. Whatever our own journey of faith may look like—steady or uncertain, joyful or costly—we are called, like Mary, to respond. May we have the courage to do so, trusting in the promises of God; for with him, nothing will be impossible.

We look forward to welcoming you to our church.
