A MESSAGE FROM OUR RECTOR
As we journey through the Easter season toward Pentecost, the month of May brings with it two powerful moments of transition: Ascension Day on Thursday 29 May, and the 80th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May. Both are turning points—marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another—and both speak deeply into what it means to live with hope that is rooted in something greater than us.
At the heart of Ascension Day is not simply the image of Christ rising into the heavens, but the promise He leaves with His followers: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8). This verse isn’t just the conclusion to Jesus’ earthly ministry—it’s the launch of ours. The Ascension is not a retreat but a release: a handing over of the mission to those who remain.
That moment is a hinge between what has been and what will be. Jesus departs, but not to leave us behind. He promises the Spirit and gives His followers a job to do. The disciples are left looking up—but not for long. Rather than being watchers of Jesus ministry the disciples must now be part of it, carrying the message of Christ with boldness, mercy, and faith. And that shift still applies to us today. We’re not meant to stay staring into the clouds; we’re meant to get stuck in, sharing His love and peace in the world around us.
To find out more about this special day do join us at Christ Church for a service with the congregation of Wraxall, Failand and Trendlewoord when Rev’d Morey Andrews will preach and Nicki will lead and preside at Communion
But this May also marks a very human turning point: 80 years since VE Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe. It was a day of hard-won relief and reflection. And much like the Ascension, it wasn’t just an ending, but a beginning—a moment when the long work of healing and rebuilding had to begin. The peace we give thanks for came at great cost, and it calls us still to be people who seek reconciliation, justice, and peace in our own time.
As we reflect on these two moments—one divine, one deeply human—we’re reminded of the kind of hope that changes things. Hope that doesn’t sit still. Hope that moves, acts, and builds. May we, too, take our place in the ongoing story—with courage, with vision, and with the promise of Christ to guide us.
