A MESSAGE FROM OUR RECTOR
Love Where You Live
It’s a lovely phrase, isn’t it? “Love where you live.” It sounds like a slogan you might see on a tote bag in the garden centre or painted on a wooden sign in a local café. I wonder what you love about the place where you live, whether it’s Nailsea, Tickenham or somewhere nearby.
Steve and I have been living in Nailsea for more than a year and have grown to love it. Whether it’s the choice of coffee shops (even Roo tries to stop at them all when we take her for a walk), the view across the causeway from Tickenham Village Hall, trips to the sea in Clevedon or the city in Bristol, there is much to love.
But what if loving where you live is more than enjoying it? What if it’s a call to get involved and care for the place and the people around you?
One of my favourite bible verses is Jeremiah 29:11 (For I know the plans I have for you…), but there is much richness in the whole chapter. Verse 7 says, “Seek the peace and prosperity of the place to which I have carried you… Pray to the Lord for it.” Whether we like it or loathe it (the Israelites were being called to settle in exile in Babylon), God calls us to be rooted in the place where we live.
Loving where we live isn’t just about enjoying the scenery, coffee shops, or proximity to both sea and city. It’s about noticing people, showing up, and asking:
- Who’s struggling?
- Who’s missing from community life?
- Where can I offer a quiet act of kindness or a prayer?
Jesus loved actual places—Galilee, Capernaum, Jerusalem. He didn’t float above reality. He walked roads, knew names, shared meals. As His Church, we’re called to do the same.
So, here’s a simple challenge for the weeks ahead: do one small thing to love where you live. Pick up any litter you see. Say hello to the person you pass by or see alone. Write a thank-you note. Lend a hand. If it’s your practice, pray for your neighbours. Invite someone to church.
Let’s be a people who say—not just with words, but with presence — “We love this place and we are here for good.”
Blessings, Nicki.
We look forward to welcoming you to our church.
